Welcome to the online home of the
Clean Heat Research Network
The Clean Heat Research Network (CHRN) is being established by stakeholders that are committed to accelerating the transition to sustainable thermal energy systems.
Thermal energy is the largest driver of energy use in Canadian buildings. Space heating and water heating are estimated to account for approximately 80% of residential and 55% of commercial energy use. Available technologies can reduce primay energy consumption by 30% to 70% in heating mode and 20% to 50% in cooling mode. In addition, there are important opportunities in water heating applications, where energy savings of over 70% have been demonstrated.
In the years to come, integrated thermal energy systems are expected to play a significant role in improving community energy performance while contributing to the achievement of federal, provincial and municipal governments’ energy efficiency and climate change objectives.
Existing technologies have the potential to significantly reduce primary energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, yet market adoptions rates remain suboptimal. The network aims to address this situation by facilitating targeted research and technology deployment.
